Glum Tortoise, Studio Technician
Glum Tortoise is a young studio that has gained a lot of exposure in the past seven years. Currently represented by prominent galleries internationally.
The artist works predominantly with painting and has had an exciting venture into her career since 2017 including seven solo shows, a multitude of press, upcoming solo shows and the opportunity to share her practice through various media.
The studio is seeking to appoint a Technician to work 2-3 days a week from Monday to Friday, and occasional Saturdays. The role requires some degree of flexibility and potentially also travelling. During key deadlines and times of travel you may be expected to work full time (5 days a week).
Main Purpose of the Job:
The role is primarily to support the Technician and Operations Manager as well as the Head Painting Assistant with practical tasks, organising the studio space and art handling. The ideal candidate will preferably have previous experience working in an artist studio or with their own creative practice (home studio or external), or from a gallery, museum or similar organisation and will be open minded, proactive and willing to show initiative.
Responsibilities:
Help direct the studio’s environmental policy
Assisting with training and development of painting assistants and interns
Managing and delegating technical tasks to painting assistants and interns
Stock management and organise offsite storage
Ordering materials and arranging deliveries and pickups
Ensuring that the studio’s operations are efficient, effective and legally compliant
The successful candidate will also:
Qualifications, experience and knowledge:
Previous experience working in an artist studio is a big advantage
Preferably experience working on a personal level with an artist
An understanding of budgets
Understanding of art handling best practices for packing/crating, transportation/shipping, and installation
Experience with stretching primed canvas
Basic knowledge of paints and hazardous materials such as solvents
Amaetur wood working skills
Basic knowledge of conservation and archival methods, techniques and materials
Experience working with tools and scaffolding
Physical strength and capable of lifting large items
Ideally experience with model making and CAD Skills (software such as Google SketchUp or Rhino)
Meticulously organised, with excellent attention to detail, flexible, and entrepreneurial nature
Experience of working as part of a team in a fast-moving environment
Skills, abilities and personal attributes:
Creative thinking and problem solving in regards to making the general running of a studio more efficient
Ability to communicate clearly with internal and external parties
Administrative and managerial experience appropriate to the role
Ability to show initiative in further developing the studio environment and structure that works best for the artist
Punctual and great organisational skills
Previous experience with Artlogic
Discretion is essential
Desirable:
Specific knowledge of art materials (i.e. paint, sculpture, ceramic etc)
Hold a valid UK driving licence
